Edit Your Preprint

Edit a preprint to update its title, subject, license, abstract, DOI, authors, or to upload a new version. You can edit a preprint from the preprint view or from your OSF project.

1. Go to the preprint editor

There are two ways you can go to your preprint editor.

From the preprint view

First, log in to the OSF.

Open your preprint by clicking My Projects in the gray navigation bar. The "My Projects" page will open.

Next, click My Preprints in the left sidebar, and a list of your preprints will appear. Click the preprint that you want to edit. You'll be taken to the "Preprint View" page.

On the "Preprint View" page, click the green Edit Preprint button on the top right of the page. The "Edit Preprint" page will open.

From your OSF project

On your dashboard, click the OSF project that contains the preprint that you want to edit. Your OSF project will open.

On the "Project Overview" page, click the Edit preprint button below your project description. The "Edit Preprint" page will open.

2. Upload

Upload a new version of your preprint

Click inside the "Upload" section to open it. Then, click inside the "Preprint File" section to expand it.

Either drag and drop or upload a new version of your preprint file into the box.

Your new file must have the same name as your original version - but don't worry, all versions are saved automatically so nothing is lost. Read more about files and version control on the OSF here.

The new version of your preprint will be labeled according to the version number. For example, if this is the first time you're uploading a new version of your preprint, the new version will be labeled "Version: 2."

If you want to edit your preprint title, continue on to the "Preprint Title" section within the "Upload" section. Or, if you're finished making changes in the "Upload" section, click Save and continue.

Edit your preprint title

Click inside the "Upload" section to open it, if it's not already. Then, click the "Preprint Title" section to expand it.

Make changes to your title in the "Preprint Title" box. Note that editing your preprint title will also change the title of your associated OSF project or component.

Click Save and continue.

3. Discipline

You can add or remove disciplines and subdisciplines in the Discipline section.

To add more, click a discipline and subdiscipline from the discipline chooser. The disciplines and subdisciplines will be highlighted in blue and will appear above the displine chooser.

Note that when you click disciplines and subdisciplines, they will automatically be added to your preprint.

To remove a discipline, click the white X next to it. Each preprint must have at least one discipline.

Click Save and continue to apply your changes.

4. Basics

Edit the license, DOI, tags, and abstract in the "Basics" section.

If your preprint doesn't have a license or if you choose to remove the license, the "Year" and Copyright Holders" fields will appear. If your preprint has a license, these fields will not be available. You can edit or add the year and copyright holders in their respective fields.

The peer-reviewed publication DOI and tags are optional, but an abstract of at least 20 characters is required.

Click Save and continue to apply your changes.

5. Authors

  1. You can add more co-authors by typing their names into the search box. If your co-authors have accounts on the OSF, their names will appear below the "Results" section. If they don’t have an account on the OSF, you can add them as an unregistered contributor by clicking the blue Add author by email address button. Click the green Add button to add additional co-authors.
  2. You can reorder authors by clicking and holding the icon with 3 bars to the left of the author's name, and then dragging and dropping the names into the correct order.
  3. You can modify authors' permissions and indicate whether or not they should appear in citations.
  4. You can also remove authors by clicking the red Remove button to the right of the author list.

Click Next to apply your changes.

6. Update

When you're finished editing your preprint, click inside the "Update" section to expand it.

Next, click the Complete button.

You will be taken to the "Preprint Details" page.

You can see the date when a preprint was last modifed in the top left of the page.

You can also see which version you're viewing below the preprint.
