Rename Files and Folders

You can rename files and folders directly from your OSF project. This help guide will walk you through how to rename files and folders.

Rename from the "Files" tab

You can also rename files and folders from the "Files" section on the project "Overview" page. The workflow is the same as described below.

On your project or component "Overview" page, click the files tab in the navigation bar.

A list of your files and folders will appear.

Click next to the file or folder that you want to rename, and a toolbar will appear in the top right of the "Files" page.

Click the Rename button in the toolbar.

The toolbar will disappear on the right and a textbox will appear on the left.

Type the new name of your file or folder into the textbox.

Then click the pencil icon on the right. If you don't want to rename your file or folder, you can click the x icon on the right to cancel your changes and return to the toolbar.

When renaming a file, be sure to add the file extension (e.g. .pdf, .docx, etc.) to the end of the new file name. The contents of the file will not render if the file extension is not included in the title. If you find yourself in this situation, don't worry! Just rename the file again and append the file extension to the end of the name.

The file or folder name will be updated.

Rename from the "File Detail" page

Click on a file from the "Files" tab or the "Files" section on the "Overview" page.

The "File Detail" page will appear.

Then click the filename in the top left.

The name will turn into a text box.

Type in the new filename (don't forget to include the file extension!). Then click the pencil icon or click the x icon to cancel your changes.

Your filename will be updated.
