Add Contributors

In this article, you will learn how to add contributors to projects and components and the different permissions levels they can have.

1. Add contributors to a project

First, go to your project or component, and your "Project Overview" page or your "Component Overview" page will appear.

Click the Contributors tab in the project navigation bar.

The "Contributors" page will appear. This page shows all of the contributors on your project or component.

Click the green +Add button to the right of "Contributors."

The "Add Contributors" modal will appear.

Type your contributor's name into the search box and then click Search. Please note that you can search by name only. 

Search results will appear below the search box.

Click the green + button to the left of the contributor who you want to add.

The contributor will appear with permissions options on the right side of the "Add Contributors" modal.

Add an unregistered contributor

An unregistered contributor is a contributor who does not have an OSF account but who is someone you would like to add to the project or component.

Type your contributor's name into the search box and click Search. Please note that you can search by name only. 

Click the add as an unregistered contributor link below the search results.

Next, enter your contributor's name and email address into the respective fields.

Then, click the green Add button. The unregistered contributor will be notified by email that they have been added to your project. There will be a link in the email that they can use to claim their OSF account.

2. Choose permissions for contributors

There are three levels of permissions that you can assign to your contributors:

  1. Read
  2. Read + Write
  3. Admin

The following table outlines the abilities of each permissions level.

Read Read + Write Admin
  • view the contents of the project

  • view the contents of the project
  • upload, edit, delete, + check out files
  • create, edit, + delete wiki pages
  • configure add-ons
  • create new components
  • view the contents of the project
  • upload, edit, delete, + check out files
  • create, edit, + delete wiki pages
  • configure add-ons
  • create new components
  • add or delete contributors
  • modify contributor’s permissions
  • create view-only links
  • make a project private or public
  • delete the project
  • register the project
  • turn the project into a preprint

Determine the level of permissions to give to your contributor from the "Permissions" menu.

If your project has components, you will see a blue Next button. If not, you will see a green Add button. Click one of these buttons to continue.

3. Add contributors to components

If your project has components, a list of your components will appear in the "Select Components" modal. Remember that each component has separate public/private settings and contributor lists. You can add different contributors to your components.

If you want to add your new contributor(s) to your components, check the boxes next to the respective components, or click the Select all link to select all of the components.

Then click the green Add button.

Your contributors will be added to your project.
