Why is my preprint private? (I want it public)

If you notice that your preprint is private and you intended it to be public there are two possible explanations. Your OSF account may have been caught in our spam filters or your preprint is in Pre-moderation with one of our preprint services.ere are a few steps you can take to understand the situation and resolve any issues.

1. Check for Spam Flagging

    • Check Your Account Status: If you received a notice that your account has been deactivated, or you notice that a public project is now private, it may have been flagged as spam.
    • Report the Issue: To have your case reviewed, please fill out the form linked below. Each case is investigated individually to determine if a mistake has been made.
    • Investigation Timeline: Once you have submitted the form, our team will review your case within 48 to 72 hours. We will contact you via the email associated with your OSF account with the outcome of the review.

2. Pre-Moderation Services

If you have submitted your preprint to a pre-moderated preprint service, your preprint will remain private until a moderator reviews it. Here’s what you should know:

  • Pending Status: Your preprint will show a "pending" status with a yellow banner at the top of the preprint page. This status indicates that your submission is being reviewed by a moderator.
  • Moderation Feedback: A moderator may accept or reject your preprint and might provide feedback during this process. Moderators may choose to remain anonymous or share their identities.

Your preprint will stay in this pending state until the moderation process is complete.

3. What to Do Next

  • If your preprint is pending, please wait for the moderation process to complete. You will receive an update once a decision has been made.
  • If your preprint or account was flagged as spam, use the form provided above to report the issue.

We appreciate your patience as we work through these processes to ensure the integrity and quality of our platform!
